Identity precedes behaviour

Scripture:  In the same way, let your light shine before people, so that they can see your good deeds and give honour to your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16 (NET)

The apostle Peter’s first letter is addressed to the Christians dispersed throughout the world. He was concerned about what they were experiencing and his letter was to encourage them that no matter what happened to them, they were the children of redemption, bought by the blood of Jesus Christ.

In Peter’s writing he first reinforces their spiritual identity; “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession.” (1Pet 2:9) They have been justified by their salvation. However, their behaviour needs attention.

This the apostle addresses in 1Pet 2:1 “So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander.” Why does Peter say this? Because he is encouraging them to behave in a way suitable for children of God who are testifying to the goodness of God. See 1Pet 2:12 “Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honourable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.”

In your daily life you are faced with behavioural choices, choosing between doing an action that honours God or one that brings disgrace upon your reputation as a child of God. Those decisions are rooted in your identity, who you believe you are.

Reinforce your identity in Christ daily, read Romans 10 and quote an applicable verse. You are a child of God.

Prayer:  Father God, May I make wise choices based on my identity as your child. Let my life reflect my belief of who I am in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection:

It is my suggestion that you journal your thoughts and experiences, even your feelings, as a means of pondering what you have read. Asking questions of the material and of yourself is the best way to learn. Use your journal to record your thoughts.
