The gracious gift of Prayer
Scripture: Be persistent in prayer, and keep alert as you pray, giving thanks to God. Colossians 4:2
Prayer is the privilege of speaking to the Creator of heaven and earth. Of knowing that he hears us when we speak to him. It is a gift given in love because God so much wants to be a part of our lives. God created us for an intimate relationship of heart-to-heart communication.
When Adam and Eve were in the garden, the bible says that they spoke to God in the cool of the evening. The fall did not stop the conversation. It did create a separation or distancing in which we now need to sincerely desire to speak and be spoken to by God.
Prayer does not require elaborate preparation or a special setting; it only requires a humble heart that sincerely seeks to connect to our Father. It is a good practice to find a quiet place, still your errant thoughts and focus on being in the presence of Almighty God. We are not limited to only that time. Sometimes we may need to cry out to God in our immediate situation. He is always there, always listening and always loving.
Some people say we should focus our attention on Jesus. Others prefer to speak to Father God. Our God is a Tri-une God and no matter which name you use he is always willing to listen and to speak. You could even say, “Father, Son and Holy Spirit …” if you so wished.
The important thing is that you actually pray!
Prayer: Dear Father, thank you that I can pray and speak to you. Thank you that it allows us to hear you. Lord God, thank you that we can participate in this communication with you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection:
It is my suggestion that you journal your thoughts and experiences, even your feelings, as a means of pondering what you have read, or allowing the blogpost to guide you. You may not accept or believe everything you read, but asking questions of the material and of yourself is the best way to learn.
