Scripture:  So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. James 2:17

I propose to better understand the verse quoted above we need to be familiar with the prior two verses which state; “If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that?” James 2:15-16

I understand these verses to be saying that once we confess faith in Jesus Christ then our behaviour should begin to reflect His life. The character trait of Jesus which strands out was the compassion he evidenced to all who were in need and came to his attention. In Christ we see the perfect example of how our spiritual lives can find expression in our day-to-day existence. Jesus made his radiant spirituality an earthly reality with simple stories he told in saying that; “the Kingdom of heaven is like . . .” And the miracles which he performed and works he did, which made God and his ways meaningful to ordinary people.

For Christ, the ordinary things in life became the instruments he could use to honour God. We have the same opportunities when we compassionately try and help those around us who are doing it tough. People will not always have the boldness to ask and when we discover a need we should try and help no matter how small our contribution.

Good works that are born out of love are a strong witness of your faith in God.

Prayer:  Holy Spirit of God, Teach me to express my faith in good works so that my life can reflect God’s glory and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
