A timely true North
Scripture: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart. Never rely on what you think you know. Remember the LORD in everything you do, and he will show you the right way.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (GNB)
We all have a sense of direction. Some more and some less. Even a small shopping centre can sometimes be confusing for me. I can remember the days of having a map book and trying to navigate to my destination. These days it’s easy because we have a GPS on our smartphones.
It is more difficult to navigate through the moral decisions we have to make on a daily basis. Is this right, should I be doing this, what if I am wrong about making this decision. Assumption of the right or wrong does not free me from the consequences of a wrong choice or decision. So where do we go?
From the time we can crawl we make decisions for good or not so good. Our conscience either gets stronger or grows weaker as we are raised to adulthood. We are influenced by our caregivers, teachers, coaches and especially our friends. What we are taught may not always be right or acceptable. Where do we get our moral direction from, and can it be considered infallible?
I assert that the Bible gives the best advice: ‘The LORD says, “I will teach you the way you should go; I will instruct you and advise you. I will keep my eye on you!”’ Psalm 32:8 (GNB)
If you would like to read the oldest basic moral code I suggest Exodus 20:1 to 17 (in the Bible) and then decide whether it is good for you or not.
Prayer: Dear God, Guide me in your ways that I may walk in the light of your Word . In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection:
Are you journalling your thoughts and experiences, even your feelings? Are you seriously thinking about what you have read? Asking questions of the material and of yourself is the best way to learn. Use your journal to record your thoughts.
